I believe that our country is still very free. The government is not overly controlling in my opinion, and we still have a decently regulated (or not regulated too much) free economy, however, the government is taking small steps, becoming more involved in the economy, and eventually becoming (possibly) a form of socialism, with one of the larger of these little steps being "obamacare." Socialism, as defined, consists of (1) various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, or (2) a system of society or group living in which there is no private property. The 1st point of this definition sounds eerily similar to obamacare does it not? Obama also confirmed that this bill did not please him, it was merely a "step in the right direction." Obama does not see the passing of this bill as the end of these "baby steps" towards socialism.
I don't mean to be disrespectful, everyone has their own opinions, but I just can't comprehend the reasoning someone would have to possess the ideological views of a liberal. Abortion - I totally disagree with this. Gay Marriage - Again, I strongly disagree with this. Gun rights - I totally agree with this (1st amendment). I also STRONGLY believe that capitalism and free enterprise is one of the top priorities of our nation. As Thomas jefferson once said (which relates to the passing of obamacare):
"[A] wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned." "If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them, they must become happy."
So my answer to your question is yes, US is a free country, but it's slowly becoming evident that the government is slowly gaining, in what my opinion, are unacceptable "powers"
