I just went through this and found a much easier and cheaper way. I had to take in my brother when my dad got sick a year and a half ago. All you need to do is go on your local court web site, download the guardian application and fill it out. Once you have filled this paperwork out, you need to go to your local court house and file a gaurdian judgement. THey will then give you a court date, once you have this, you up until 10 days of the court date to serve your parents with a certified letter letting them know you are appling for gaurdian ship. If they disagree, they need to respond with a letter to the courts before the court date. One the day of court the judge should ask the following Questions:
1) Who are you in relation to your brother,
2) Why are you appling for gaurdian ship
Once these questions are asked he/she will then ask the following questions to your brother.
1) Do you want (your name) to become your guardian
2) Are you happy where you are
I cannot remember the rest of the questions-sorry
Once the questions are done, the judge will make his verdict, In our case it was just a few minutes, and a total of 15 minutes in front of the judge.
If you are granted guardianship, it will take 2-3 week to be finallized. This is a much easier way to become a guardian over a relative.
