Recently I have been studying the story of Nicholas Nickleby, it was written by Charles Dickens in the 19th century. The novel was written in parts in a newspaper (periodical) because Dickens got paid per section he wrote. We focus on chapter 8 - Dotheboys School; it was a boarding school for boys, it costs a mere £20 a year which is meant to include food, drinks, accommodation and Medicines/health care, the school name Dotheboys gives us the impression that they do the boys hard, meaning they have a hard time there by making them do chores instead of actually being educated, the school is situated in Yorkshire, it was far away from London so the children couldn’t run away, so the parents of the children couldn’t see the school and how it was run and also the public itself, parents don’t actually come to see the school because it is so far out, they rely on Mr Squeers word. Dickens wanted to write this novel because he had seen some schools that were run terribly and wanted the people of London and England to see what actually was happening in schools. The schools name Dotheboys Hall gives us the impression that they do the boys hard we now this because they are forced fed horrible remedies of medicine mixed with other liquids.
Firstly, I am going to talk about the conditions of the school. The school gets very bad impression as soon as Nicolas enters “hell was breeding here” from the description of the school, because the Victorians were very religious and the idea of hell would have astonished them the fact that hell was breeding means it is spreading around and might get into the boys.” A bare dirty room” showing there were no luxuries just the bare minimal showing that Squeers is making the most for his money spending minimal of his budget, Mr Squeers “steals” from the parents because he doesn’t pay for repairs he makes the children do it. His Wife (no name, not important, this shows that the women was meant to stay at home and cook for the house whilst the father went out and earned money) buys the worst food, and cooks it without care.
The school was dark and gloomy making it a scaring place to learn.” the walls were stained and discoloured” the walls haven’t been cleaned and are very old making the boys feel like tramps. There was no wall paper or paint probably just plain brick making it cold (keeping no heat in). In the class room the boys were meant to be taught, “Long rickety desks cut and notched” showing that Mr Squeers doesn’t care about the Quality of the classroom; the tables aren’t cleaned or looked after if we compare his home to the school he has a nice warm coal fire, comfy beds and chairs whilst the children get a blanket and old beds. Squeers sees the school as a business “our shop” he calls it, showing he sees it as a business (money making scheme) Squeers aims are, to make money, feed the children as little as possible, when a new children comes to the school he steals there best luxuries like there new shoes. , and use power, the cane is a POP (prop of power) to scare the children and gain respect, he gets instant obedience using his cane to scare the children into obedience.
Mr Squeers is a greedy money maker, he spends it on himself and buys the best food, His wife is horrible, she pretends to be nice to Nicolas showing that she is two faced to the children, she looks down on them, Squeers uses the cane as a weapon “ I’ll take the skin off his back” showing he doesn’t care about the boys pain threshold, and the fact that he uses it as a weapon shows us that it is like he is at war with the children, he is not a good head teacher because his aim is to make and attempt to teach the children, Squeers is described as evil but I personally think he is just strict , he makes pupils do general clean-ups” fixing windows or even gardening, he is not really a good head teacher because he uses Yorkshire slang as in spelling botany, botiney. The Victorians would be upset that he is teaching wrong English skills to the children which they will then pass on to there children making the bad English breed in the English society. Dickens wrote the novel because it wasn’t compulsory to go to school so not everyone had a education, you had to pay to get a place in school unlike nowadays, there was not a education service that actually said you had to go to school, you did not need a education or qualifications to go to and be a head teacher, all you needed was money and pupils but most of the money makers/teachers were bad teachers Mr Squeers for example, also to show Victorians what it is like inside a school because none of them knew about the violent teachers. Parents sent there children off with ease not knowing what pain they were getting inflicted on. Dotheboys Hall is one example. Dickens exposed the bad schools by visiting them and then going to the government to do something about it, this is was dickens aim for the government was.
Education has changed dramatically through out the years because we have teachers who have education and qualifications and need to have a knowledge based on the subject schools don’t usually get taught by the head teacher (but we do). At school they called the head, the headmaster giving the name more power. Education is now free unlike the Dickens era and education is now compulsory, and corporal punishment is a key part in Mr. Squeers School because he uses a cane as a prop to scare the children. All this is now illegal in school.
School for me is about friends and results and I now enjoy school a lot and I am hoping to get good grades. I enjoyed studying Nicolas Nickleby because I wanted to know what school was like for my ancestors. Dotheboys Hall is all about health and safety/ the governments’ night-mare because boys are made to do chorus instead of education.

You need more quotes and then you need to explore the quotes, i.e picking on single words out of the quote and looking for further meaning . I havent read it but thats what I suggest already.
