French media sources are reporting that Didier Drogba has been ruled out of the World Cup after he sustained a fractured elbow in the first 20 minutes of Cote d’Ivoire’s friendly encounter with Japan in Sion, Switzerland earlier today.

L'Equipe and Canal+ both claim that the Chelsea striker's hopes of playing have completely vanished after Ivory Coast boss Sven-Goran Eriksson had earlier confirmed the injury and admitted he was 'concerned' about his skipper's hopes of competing in South Africa.

With only a quarter of an hour gone in the game, Drogba clashed with Japanese defender Tulio, leaving him a little dazed. Tulio, the scorer of both a goal and an own goal against England last week, went for the ball with his leg raised, while Drogba's right arm came up simultaneously. The resulting collision between the Ivorian's elbow and Tulio's knee was purely accidental, but the Chelsea forward was ultimately withdrawn due to the injury. CSKA Moscow’s Seydou Doumbia was quickly brought into the frey.

Drogba, who is rated as the third best player in the world by the Castrol Rankings, had already made his influence tell in the early stages of the game, when his free kick was deflected home by Brazilian-born Tulio.

Despite the loss of Drogba, the Ivorians went on to win the game, which was played over three 45 minute periods, 2-0, though they will not relish a trip to South Africa without their recognised star forward.

Damn, although the Ivory Cost were never tipped to win or have much of a chance this is a BIG blow for them.

Yeah thats a big blow for them especially being in the group that they are in. Brazil and North Korea to go through in Group G imo, the Koreans have a good team.

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast -- Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has hope of playing in the World Cup after having surgery on his broken right arm in a Swiss hospital Saturday.

The Ivory Coast football federation (FIF) said in a statement the operation at the Lindenhof Hospital in Berne was a success and Swiss doctors and the team's medical staff are confident that the Chelsea forward will make a "speedy recovery."

The federation did not give further details about the time required for Drogba's recovery. Ivory Coast's first game is June 15 against Portugal.

"The FIF thank the sporting world and all those in the Ivory Coast, in Africa and throughout the world who have shown their support to Didier Drogba and the Ivory Coast," read a statement on the FIF website.

"He's not at all out of the World Cup. He can still play. We don't know if he will be able to play the first game -- that depends on the verdict of the medical team. But he's definitely not out [of the tournament].''

Drogba broke his arm in an exhibition match against Japan on Friday.

Do a barrel roll!
If they progress through the group stage, he'll definitely play. Hopefully it doesn't come to that though, because it's unlikely Ivory Coast will make it without him. Tough group. So hopefully we do see him play from the start. And show the tournament just how good African football is these days, hopefully Ghana and Cameroon also do well.

It wa s a real bone crunching tackle. As a Manchester United supporter I hope it stops him from playing at the start of next season. Porbably won't but I can be optimistic.
