(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); For today, I'm going to be your new English teacher. Seems like some of you need it. You might think this is pointless because it's the interent, but I can garuntee that many people spell words wrong or make a lot of mistakes in everyday use. Also, if you want to become a moderator on this site, as shown in the sticky in 'Site Announcments', u cnt tlk lyke dis n expct t b a mod. Let's begin!

I'm and Am.

Many people don't seem to know how to use these two words. Many times, I see "Am going to go...". This is incorrect.
I'm, or I am, refers to what you are doing. Such as, "Mum, I'm going to the shop..." or "I'm playing the Xbox..."

Your and You're.

Your is to indicate someones belonging. "Barry, you forgot YOUR bag." or "I'm coming over to YOUR house."
You're is the abbriviation of you are. This is to be used in sentences such as "You're sitting in my seat." or "You're not helping."

There, their and they're.

There has mulitple definistions.
1)In or to that place - "They went over there."
2)Used to call attention to something - "There's a good boy"
3)To introduce a sentence where the verb comes before its subject - "There was plenty to eat"

Their
This is to indicate something belonging to them. "Their coats are over there."
Belonging to a person. "Somebody has left their coat on the bus."

They're
Meaning they are. To be used in sentences such as "They're going to the fair." or "They're leaving tomorrow."

? (question mark)

Many times, I see people who write a sentence and finish of with a question mark to add a sense of confusion, such as, "But that's not real?" or "you did that wrong?"
This can be corrected by actually adding a question, such as, "But that's not real, is it?" or "You did that wrong, didn't you?"

, (Comma)

Commas don't, but do (we'll get to that in a minute), have set places. Commas are supposed to mark a pause in a sentence or to seperate items in a list. While there isn't a set place, they should be put in where many people are most likely going to need a quick breath.
Example "While there isn't a set place they should be put in where many people are most likely going to need a quick breath."
With comma(s) "While there isn't a set place, they should be put in where many people are most likely going to need a quick breath."

Commas also save lives. A sentence such as "We are going to eat Grandma" makes it sound a bit cannibleistic. Add a comma before Grandma, "We are going to eat, Grandma" makes it sound like you are eating your dinner instead of your actual Grandma.
You should only add a comma before a name if you are addressing someone, such as "you wasn't there was you, Frodo?"

! (Excalamtion mark)

These are generally used to add a sense of excitment to a sentence, and to get away from a monotone style voice. A phrase such as "we won" sounds dull. Adding an exclamation mark and excitment sounds more cheerful, "We won!"

Capital letters.

These are to be used at the start of a sentence, someones name or a place, such as "Jonny Swashbucket, Gabriel Demitri, Austrailia, China, Electronic Arts, Infinity Ward and so on. Using A Capital Letter At The Stary Of Every Letter Or In ThE MiDdLe oF A lEtTer LoOkS StUpiD, and is incredibly hard to do.

These, to me, seem to be the common mistakes. If anyone has anymore, tell me and I might add them.
This took ages to write so I would appreciate it if you didn't critisice it by saying "I know about all this, what a shit post" or whatever. Fact is, you should all know it, you just don't use it.
Like I said in my first sentence, if you want to become a mod, you can't use appaling grammar, so just a heads up to the people who don't look at the site announcment stickies but one day applies for mod who can't use correct grammar.

Let's see, you've got some grammar/spelling issues here so let's go through and correct them for you Winky Winky. (I will Bold what I changed and then put in parenthesis what you did wrong Winky Winky)

I just corrected you too. How about that eh?

So my first mistake "seems" came after I deleted a few lines and forgot to add in the it and add a lower s. Second one, "guarantee", what can I say? I just missed out my u. Next comma, just another mistake in which I actually have no idea why I put that there for. The next comma, however, does need to be there. You can say the sentence "I'm, or I am, refers..." how it is, with the "I am...", but even when you take out the commas and the "I am...", the sentence still flows, 'I'm refers to...". There is a name for it but I have forgot what it's called. Next one, "definisitons", again, just a typing mistake I guess. Okay, you got me, I can't spell cannibalistic properly when I touch type... Okay, so I get mixed up on was and were, shoot me.

You know, this thread is not about spelling mistakes, it's about common mistakes such as I'm, theres, yours and so on. Everyone makes spelling mistakes, including you as you demonstrated above. I think that you are just trying to give me an ass kicking for the one I gave you in the debate section. Fair enough if so but that's the debate section. Things that go on in there are only debates, not to start a feud with someone who makes a stronger debate than someone else.

Actually you didn't "kick" my ass in the debate section as I still feel I won that debate against you so please don't feel as if you won that battle Winky Winky. Yes I make mistakes too and I believe that somewhere in your main post you mentioned something about people commonly misspelling things in their posts and you were trying to correct that, so please don't be a hypocrite or a two-face, it's not very nice.

Also please don't feel as if you're the big shit on this forum but correcting others as there are multiple people doing it-myself being one of them Winky Winky- and we just do it for fun and to get a quick little laugh out of it, not to tear down the person we are antagonizing :/.

Thanks a bunch,

Common mistakes such as using 'there' instead of 'their' or 'they're', not typing errors. I'm also not acting like anything. I'm sure that a thread like this will have been made before I made this one too. And as for you getting a laugh out of correcting other peoples mistakes, I fail to see the humour in it, but yet I'm not 12. Also I'm not antaginising anyone. I haven't directed my post at a particular person(s).

Thanks a bunch.

I suggest you 2 stop, before it gets out of hand.

On topic: Really good thread, I'd say I pretty much do everything you said in this thread, but it was still fun to read, even though I didn't need to. It will be funny to see how many people type with the correct grammar when replying to this thread. Happy

Just 1 small mistake: In your 'Capital Letters' section, you said 'Stary' instead of 'Start', but other than that, good thread. =D
