This unfortunate tortoises is the last of its kind. The Geochelone nigra abingdoniis one of eleven extant subspecies of Galapagos Tortoises. He has been labeled the rarest animal in the world. They have tried reproduction with other tortoises but it was unsuccessful. It was estimated to be between 60-90 years of age, but still healthy as a horse

His name is Lonesome George, they say that even if he was successful with the reproductive act, the baby tortoises would not be the same species as George is.
George is said to be healthy and should live continually, but it still stands as he is the last known tortoise of his type...
Possibility of another pure breed of his kind
Another male tortoise by the name of Tony, ( hey that's my name

), who currently resides in a Prague zoo, has recently been discovered as most likely being an additional pure breed, native, tortoise. Believed to be born around 1960, Tony has been housed in the zoo since 1972.
It is still unclear if Tony is a match to the breed of George's.
