Analyst Michael Pachter says the days of free multiplayer over xbox live are numbered.

If your like most gamers, your probably reading this in between throat-ripping sessions of call of duty: modern warfare 2 multiplayer. The game's developer, infinity ward, says xbox live users have already invested 1.75 billion hours playing MW2 within six months of its release.
Xbox live subscription fees and social life aside, those billions of hours in multiplayer matches have come at no additional expense to players. Videogame-industry research analyst Michael Pachter says that's going to change, since game publishers are busy figuring out business models that will charge you for online multiplayer across both live and playstation network.
''Fall 2011, i think call of duty: modern warfare 3 is a subscription game,'' Pachter, told us from his Los Angeles office. ''it'll probably still have a single-player campaign and some free online multiplayer and co-op , Enough to hook you.''
Pachter, one of the games industry's most high-profile analysts, says he's heard directly from Activision that the company wants to start charging you directly to put some bullets in the head of xXHaloLUveRxx. And once Activision is successful, all the other game publishers will follow suit, he explains.

My Opinion:

WHAT THE HELL??
Gaming is already expensive i mean we already pay 50 dollars a year or more for a live subscription, and games are 60 to 70 dollars off the shelf, Now charged for online multiplayer?? all i have to say is the companys are getting WAY TO GREEDY, they need to tone it down a bit, if they honestly think this is gonna work and get them money, they can think again. Subscription to a video game for multiplayer is BULLSHIT, specially when u already have to pay for online connection, NOW ANOTHER FEE???

Their talking about a range of maybe $15 dollars per subscription, what about for someone who plays 4 or 5 different games online, your looking at 100 dollars a month just to subscribe to games. NO THANKS

DON'T THINK SO, THIS JUST MIGHT RUIN VIDEO GAMINGEek

I would only ever pay to play a multiplayer game if it is an EPIC game with lots of things that will be refreshing and new when I come across them.

No Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Halo, MAG, MGS4online, or any other game would do that for me. The closest would be MAG.

For me to pay-to-play a game, it would have to be an awesome MMORPG. I would have gotten into WOW, but when it came out, I was kinda "done" with the WarCraft series and had no interest.

I might get a year of Star Wars: The Old Republic next spring when it comes out, but that's it.

I used to play a GREAT MMORPG that was text-based called Aardwolf. It's been running since 1996. And guess what? It's ALWAYS BEEN FREE. They ask for donations, and always get plenty of them with their "small" playerbase....and when I say "small" I mean for MMORPG's. For a text MMORPG, it's one of the largest of all time, and still is....14 years later.
