How to Become a Master Gamer

This a pretty simple how to. It requires dedication to your game, and to becoming a master gamer. It isn't hard but as with any real life game it takes practice.

You must login or register to view this content.

Steps

#1.Realize that just because it is a video game does not mean that it does not take practice to master. As with any game it takes just as much practice. Although, it does take less physical action.

#2.Choose your game. Your game should be something you will not easily get bored playing. It has to keep you interested. Remember you will be advancing beyond the low levels of the game and that it might take a while to accomplish.

#3.Know your controls. If it is a computer game and you are using a keyboard and mouse, know which keys perform which functions. Usually the game manual or help will give you this information. If it is a console game or you are using a control-pad or joystick, know all the buttons and what action they accomplish.

#4.Beat the single player of the game of your choice. If you can't make it through the single player, chances are you won't last long in multiplayer

#5.Start at the lowest level. Begin the game on the beginner level. When it becomes too easy move to the next level.

#6.Adapt your skills. Don't get frustrated if you do poorly at first. Figure out what you are doing wrong and fix it. When you reach the highest level, return to the lowest level and move up to the highest again just to make sure you got it.

#7.Copy videos of skilled gamers as much as possible. If there are any, they can save a lot of time. Watch how they do each shot, each trick, each area, etc. It may have taken them years to figure out a particular technique, but you can have it right away by watching and copying their videos. And stick with the technique until it becomes second-nature.

#8.Play through an area or level 20 to 30 times. (in a row, if possible.) This is where the real skill is made. Each time you repeat a level, you get better at it (and your gaming skills in general,) so playing an area 20-30 times in a row is a quick way to learn or figure out those new skills. And even 5 times in a row is better than once.

#9.Show off your skills. Impress your friends by showing them up in head-to-head or just round play. Also if you're under the age of 17 and you're playing an M rated game, prepare yourself to be the main target of everyone in the game, because you're not supposed to be there.

#10.Stop and think before you use racial slurs online, as they are getting played out and people get very little rise out of them now.

#11.Showing loyalty to a game company or franchise (ex. ea sports) whether their product is quality or not, is not a good habit. Base your opinions on individual games, not the company which makes them or just because its in a franchise.

#12.Find a game that helps develop most of your "Gamer Senses". Some of the Gamer Senses include:

* Reflexive Ability
* Platform Calculation
* Self Control
* Game Knowledge
* Timing
* Self respect for yourself and others during online play

#13.Take a break. The last thing you want is to be totally obsessed with a game. Also, playing a game too much can lower how well you play it.

You must login or register to view this content.

Tips

* If your game offers online play take it. It is a good way to quickly improve your skills as most players online are already masters at the game.

* Never ever stand still.

* It takes practice to master Platform Calculation. Usually by measuring how high you jump and how far you can go.

* Self Control means how well you can control your character, i.e. on the edge of a cliff. Self Control could also mean your language, but we intend leaning on character control.

* A good game that improves reflexes might be the Mario and Luigi RPG Series, but this is only a suggestion.

* Always have fun!

* To reduce the risk of a heart attack, don't get too worked up when you are defeated.

Warnings

* These steps don't work with RPGs because the game progresses as you progress.

* Never play any videogame or computer game for too long. While they are fun to play, there is much more to life besides video games. Remember to take breaks and do other activities.

* Exploiting glitches is dangerous(unless on a game console without hacking) if you don't know the risks, especially if they involve tapping into codes or messing with level structures. However, shortcuts and cheats are there on purpose, so use these whenever you can. That's why they're there.

* Never use cheats on an MMORPG or an online game. For example, like RuneScape, JaGeX has said many times: "There is NO cheat codes coded into the game, and we won't even think about putting some into the game!"

* Energy drinks may serve as a temporary solution to more energy which would mean being able to play longer, but it's just a drink. After the energy from the high levels of sugar in the drink have worn off, you'll crash.

Things You'll Need:

* Good Hand 2 Eye Coordination
* Natural Ability at Gaming
* TONS of Time to Practice
* Money to Spend on Travel and Food

Step 1

To find a list of games you can compete at for a contract go to www.thecgs.com or if you want compete independently You must login or register to view this content. is the place to go. These are basically considered the big leagues.
#
Step 2

To start you should choose a game you enjoy playing because what is the point in being a professional at it if you don't enjoy playing it.
#
Step 3

Once you have chosen a game listed on one of the sites you should begin practicing for several hours a day minimum online or Xbox Live, etc depending on your platform. If you don't have that kind of time to devote to your game, you most likely will never reach professional caliber. If you have chosen a team game like Counter Strike, you should meet with your team everyday and practice, work on strategies and such. It is also recommended you do research for strategies on the internet and is a good idea to join several popular forums having to do with your game.
#
Step 4

After you have practiced for a minimum of several months on your strict training schedule, it is time to test the waters. You should try to find a local competition, but if they are none in your area you can just go ahead and signup for the preliminaries for the Championship Gaming Series and/or the World Cyber Games closest to your area. This can be done on their websites
#
Step 5

They will get back in touch with you and provide you with the necessary information and in some cases documents you may have to fill out and return.
#
Step 6

Time to compete. Please remember it is only game so don't take it too personal if you lose. There will ALWAYS be more chances in the future. You should also remember good gamer etiquette if you go to a competition especially if you are on camera. It is fine to talk a little trash, but you should not swear on camera because a large percentage of the audience are kids and this is also frowned upon by producers and will most likely cut down your camera time.
#
Step 7

Now if you are trying to get a contract you just keep trying until you get into the nationals for the Championship Gaming Series. They will have a combine to display your skills and you must impress one of the General Managers there enough for them to draft you. You should get to know each of them and keep coming every year until you get drafted. Make sure you bring your A-Game because you are playing for contract worth $30,000 minimum and up to $100,000 after endorsements for ONLY 2 MONTHS OF WORK!!
#
Step 8

If you are not trying to get a contract and are just doing World Cyber Games, you are going to have to keep trying until you beat nationals and then you will get to compete at the World level. They have a hefty amount of prize money the further you get up the ladder in this one, but I personally prefer the Championship Gaming Series.

Tips & Warnings

*You are going to have to have a good bit of money set aside for travelling to different competitions, lodging, and food.

*Championship Gaming Series offers travel stipends you can compete for to help with costs.

*STICK WITH IT, it is almost impossible to become an established professional gamer over night.

*You should always take breaks after playing for a period of time. It is unhealthy to just sit there all day.
