This CCTV footage shows a middle-aged woman stroking a cat, then throwing it in a wheelie bin, slamming the lid and walking off.
The woman was filmed outside a house in Coventry at about 8pm on Saturday.
Four-year-old tabby Lola was trapped in the bin for 15 hours before owners Stephanie Andrews-Mann, 28, and husband Darryl, 28, found her yesterday morning.
The couple, who installed the CCTV after their car was hit by careless drivers, put the footage on YouTube and Facebook in an attempt to find the culprit.
Mr Andrews-Mann said: “I looked inside and I found her in the bin, she was terrified and covered in her own mess.” West Midlands police said the RSPCA would lead the investigation as it was a matter of animal cruelty.
