Roberts, dubbed the Mortal Kombat killer by the media, beat to death Zoe Garcia, half-sister of his girlfriend, Heather Trujillo. The two were supposedly babysitting the child when they kicked, hit, and slammed the child to the floor.

The initial reason they gave was that they were reenacting moves from Mortal Kombat. Garcia's aunt and stepmother believed that this was just an alibi, and that video game violence was not the issue.

The sister, Trujillo, got a plea bargain and received an 18-year suspended sentence, and six years in a youth offender program.
