Here's a little story I came across while doing some ghost research:
(in my own words because I can't find the article anymore)
A woman(let's call her jennifer) that lives alone decided to move away from her house because she needed to move on from mourning her husband who was killed in a car accident. So she moved away and a different family moved in the house.
About 6 months later, the woman(lets call her sally) who moved into the house called the Jennifer, and asked her if the house had been haunted at all. She replied "no, I've never noticed any strange paranormal activity in the house the entire time I've lived there, why? What has been going on?"
Sally explained that every day she would see a figure of a woman sobbing at the kitchen sink, looking out of a window above the sink. The figure never moved or did anything else, just stood there and sobbed for a while.
Jennifer then replied, "Oh my god, that's me! I used to stand there and mourn the death of my husband for hours on end!" This shocked both of them. The fact that she was seeing a "ghost" of a person who was still alive made them both question what constitutes a ghost or haunting.
In my belief, a lot of it is left over energy, as in the aforementioned account. I do believe that spirits or energy can be left behind.
