Simple = one independent clause
Compound = 2+ independent clauses
Complex = one independent and 1+ dependent clause(s)
Compound-complex = 2 independent and 1+ dependent clause(s)

An independent clause is when a portion of a sentence can stand alone as its own sentence. A dependent clause can not.
