NEW YORK (WPIX) — An NYC woman is seeking a court order to extract sperm from her dead husband so she can have the family she says he always wanted.
According to authorities, Victoria Chege's husband, George Kamau, committed suicide on Monday in Norwalk, Conn. Chege maintains in court papers that "time is of the essence" and that her husband's sperm must be extracted as soon as possible.
Chege filed court papers in Manhattan Supreme Court after the Sperm and Embryo Bank of New Jersey told her they couldn't perform the operation without court approval.
If her request is approved, the sperm would be implanted in the widow's friend, Etagheu Asefa, who she chose to be the child's surrogate mother.
The case does have precedent, as judges in Texas and California have approved similar requests.
