The AK-47 is a selective-fire, gas-operated 7.62x39mm assault rifle, first developed in the Soviet Union by Mikhail Kalashnikov. The designation AK-47 stands for Kalashnikov Automatic Rifle, 1947 Model (Russian: Автомат Калашникова 47, tr. Avtomat Kalashnikova 47). It is officially known as Avtomat Kalashnikova (or simply 'AK'. It is also known as a Kalashnikov or Russian jargon Kalash.

Design work on the AK began in the last year of World War II (1944). After the war 1946, the AK-46 was presented for official military trials; and, in 1947, the fixed-stock version was introduced into service with select units of the Soviet Army. An early development of the design was the AKS-47 (S—Skladnoy or "folding"), which was equipped with an underfolding metal shoulder stock. In 1949, the AK-47 was officially accepted by the Soviet Armed Forces and used by the majority of the member states of the Warsaw Pact.

Firing the 7.62x39mm cartridge, the AK-47 produces significant wounding (including hydrostatic shock) when the projectile tumbles and fragments in tissue; but it produces relatively minor wounds when the projectile exits the body before beginning to yaw.

The original AK-47 was one of the first true assault rifles. Even after six decades—because of its durability, low production cost, and ease of use—the model and its variants remain the most widely used and popular assault rifles in the world. It has been manufactured in many countries and has seen service with regular armed forces as well as irregular, revolutionary and terrorist organizations, worldwide. The AK-47 was the basis for developing many other types of individual and crew-served firearms. More AK-type rifles have been produced than all other assault rifles combined.

Kalashnikov goal was to design a cheaply manufactured, automatic weapon that fired the new Soviet 7.62x39mm intermediate power round. This round was intended to be a compromise between the pistols rounds fired from submachine gun, which were controllable but lacked power, and the rifle cartridges fired from heavier machine guns, which were either too heavy to fire while on the move or, if lightened, uncontrollable during automatic fire. The conventional wisdom is that the Nazi's originated the concept of an assault rifle with their MP44 machine-pistol design, (which fired the 7.92x33 "8mm Kurz" round) and the Soviets copied them, but this is disputed by Ezell -- both sides may have developed such weapons concurrently. Furthermore, Kalashnikov was hardly the only _Soviet_ designer working toward this end at this time. Other designers looking at the 7.62x39 cartridge included Simonov (designer of the SKS) and Tokarev (designer of the weapons that bear his name).

Personally I wouldn't be all that worried about power if I was shooting at people. Lets be honest, as long as it's not like a BB gun then it's going to knock you down. Hence why I'd rather an M15 which is more accurate.

Well for me I like being close and mid range and finding AK-47 ammo is really easy, but yeah Accuracy is needed as well and what is the point of power if your going to miss. So M15 Facts, or M15 & 16 Facts.

the AK-47 is an amazing rifle. ive had the chance to shoot it and it is great...fairly good accuracy and power, kicks like a mule though. it's tough and and extremley hard to break. in my opinon the AK-47 is one of the best rifles in the world.

I meant m16 lol. That my friend is what 7 pints of larger will do to your ability to type.
