The Impact of Technology

Ring, ring, ring! “Pick up the phone” your mother says. Imagine if there were no cell phones, computers, email, Internet, or airplanes. We would be in chaos! Technology which has been around since cave men has made crucial advancements to our lives and others. We have come up with systems and technological advances to make things easier to use. Throughout the past years technology has given us so many advances that we Americans take for granted; it has benefited us for good and bad and has created life changing advantages over the traditional way of life.
Technology all began with the cave man. Whether it was starting a fire with two rocks or making the wheel many centuries ago, technology has been around forever. Throughout the past years, it has progressed and we have created many wonderful improvements to our lives. Some examples are the train, the engine, the car, the telephone, and the internet, but the list goes on forever. Perhaps the biggest change was the train. It created new ways of travel and drastically changed American life.
Trains have existed since the 1500’s in places like Germany, but it wasn’t until 1803 when Samuel Homfray funded the development of the steam-powered vehicle. Before the steam engine all trains were horse-drawn. On February 22, 1804 the steam powered locomotive was able to move a load of 10 tons of iron, 70 men, and five wagons 9 miles.
While the steam powered train was a huge advancement, it wasn’t until 1821, when an Englishman, named Julius Griffiths was the first person to patent a passenger road train. In September, 1825, the whole train business changed. Stockton & Darlington RR Company began to carry people and goods using locomotives designed by George Stephenson. The locomotive was able to transport 450 passengers over 9 miles in one hour!
“Colonel John Stevens is considered to be the father of American Railroads” in About.com’s opinion. He demonstrated that a steam locomotive is safe and can be used all the time. Since that time trains have improved and now are able to reach speeds in excess of 200 mph. The next major improvement in transportation was the car engine.
America had trains, but those were bulky, and couldn’t go everywhere. America need something else, something that could go almost anywhere, and was compact enough to allow a single passenger to use. Thus came the engine and the car. In 1862, French engineer Alphonse Beau de Rochas came up with the principle of the 4-step combustion engine. A 4-step engine work by these steps.
1. A fuel-air mixture is brought into the engine.
2. This mixture explodes which pushes on a piston
3. The piston creates energy in which powers the engine.

In 1876, a German named Nikolaus August Otto built the first engine based on Rochas’ principle. The problem with this engine was that it was extremely heavy and was only able to be used by the industry and electrical power companies. Gottlieb Daimler came up with the idea of a much lighter engine and in 1885, created a light 2-step combustion engine. A couple years later, in 1889, he invented a 4-step engine that is the ancestor of the engine. This invention sparked the automobile revolution in place like Michigan. Cars are very useful, but they can’t go over sea and require road on which to drive.
The first planes were invented before the Wright Brothers, but they were only gliders. The Wright Brothers invented the first fixed wing prop-powered plane. The features of this plane are:
1. A fixed-wing which allowed the airplane to move farther and was safer to travel on
2. A propeller powered plane engine, which allowed the plane to move and maintain its place in the air
3. A rudder in which the plane can be turned left and right.

The Wright Brothers built the first plane in 1903. They placed a patent for a flying-machine; this was very controversial and people were saying that they could not do it. The plane was able to travel at a height of 10 feet, and move 120 feet, and stay aloft for about 12 seconds. The first plane wasn’t very effective and wasn’t easy for people to use. The success of this plane sparked another revolution in which new and better planes were created. Planes were first used in mainly WW1. Italy had small bomber planes, which allowed them to dominate the airspace. As known by common knowledge, planes have increased in popularity and there are now small planes, and commercial planes which allow people to travel freely across the world with ease. Now enough transportation, let’s get to communication: The Cell Phone.
The idea of the cell phone was first thought of in the late 1940’s. The idea was that you could take a telephone anywhere that you wanted and that you would be able to use it with ease. The modern cell phone was invented in 1973 by Dr. Martin Cooper, a former Motorola employee. The first call was to his rival Joel Engel who developed the idea of cell phone use to communicate between cars, but Cooper was the first to develop a phone that works outside a car.
The phone invented by Dr. Cooper was called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x. If you would see this phone today you would not believe that that was a cell phone. It weight about 2 puns and was a foot long! The problem was that it cost $4000 dollars and only business and military personnel were to use it. It took 10 year, and many advances for phones to kick off. The next great advancement was the computer.
The computer was a great advancement to our lives and without it I would be using a typewriter for this paper. We have many computer manufactures like HP, Dell, Asus, and Macintosh aka Apple, but who made the first? Charles Babbage came up with the idea of programmable machines. With this idea John Presper Eckert & John W. Mauchly created the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer). This computer was extremely heave and took up a whole room! After this major people like Steve Jobs and Bill gates created Operating systems and computers to go along with this. Technology has created many advances to us, and has made our life simpler and more efficient.
