It’s a risky move financially to put it mildly.

Luck was a lock to go first overall in the draft, and the delay makes the presence of a rookie wage scale when Luck is taken even more likely. Luck spoke often about wanting to graduate and improvements he felt like he still needed to make in his game. It wasn’t just lip service. (Peter King reported as much regarding Luck a few weeks ago.)

Still, Luck seems to be at a different talent level than someone like Jake Locker or Matt Leinart who returned for their senior seasons. By all indications, Luck’s draft stock is closer to Peyton Manning, who also returned for his senior season.

Luck had another week left before he had to make the decision. We wonder if the timing of this announcement could influence Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh’s decision to go pro again or not.

Harbaugh seems likely to leave, but there have already been a lot of surprising moments in the coaching search.

Well Carolina Panther fans, your season has ended, however, the losses just continue to roll in. Whether or not they would have taken Luck or not (Would have been ****ing crazy not to) is debatable, this pick had a lot of value in it from teams looking to trade up to get the top QB in the draft.

Now the question is does Harbaugh hang around Stanford one more year and take a shot at winning a National Championship. It's risky for both but I still think they'd both be hot commodities again next year. Harbaugh would even benefit more from returning a year and proving he isn't just a one year wonder.

Fairly certain that the new CBA is going to be in place before the start of the 2012 season. The league makes too much money for there to be a work stoppage. Rookie contracts aren't going to be as astronomical as they are now once the new CBA is in place, while the NFLPA does look out for player interests they are governed by veterans/ex-players who tend to look down on contracts currently given out to unproven rookies vs. the ones given out to 10 year vets. Also on the unlikely scenario that his stock drops, well just ask Jake Locker about that one.

Jake Locker isn't the same type of QB as Andrew Luck. Locker is a QB who never was really accurate and legs could get him out of trouble. Andrew Luck is the more prototypical QB, good arm strength and an accurate passer.

I never said anything about a work stoppage. This years NFL draft is going to be under the new CBA not the old.

Oh, that's my mistake. I thought that this upcoming draft was going to be under the old CBA. Fair enough about the compensation he's going to receive in either draft, however I still stand by my point that when you're guaranteed to go #1 you take it. I can see not wanting to play for an organization like the Panthers, especially since they seem to want to do things on the cheap. While he would've taken an initial publicity hit by declaring that he didn't want to play for them, it would've subsided. Outside of San Diego nobody seems to remember that Eli did so before the '04 draft, nor do people mention anything about Elway doing it when recollecting his legacy.

I'm with you on the fact that if you can be number 1 you take that opportunity. I just don't see him having a bad season (like Locker) that hurts his draft stock. The only thing wrong with saying you don't want to play for an organization is you shun their fan base.

Very true about the fans, though to be fair I think the fan base in Carolina is dwindling as we speak. I live near LA and I've been hoping that we can snatch up one of these teams that post low attendance figures, it'd be great to be able to see an NFL game and not have to drive to San Diego. Anyway, good talk. I wasn't aware of CBA being renegotiated this year, so thanks for that information.

Good talk. :y: LA should be getting their team soon, probably as soon as that stadium they are building is finished. Probably going to be stealing the Vikings away from Minnesota.
