If you thought firing Tom Cable annoyed Raiders fans, wait until they hear about this.

Adam Schefter of ESPN dropped a bombshell Sunday morning: Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha’s contract has voided because of a previously unknown option in his contract. Asomugha is headed for free agency.

Even the Raiders appear surprised by the development. They had a team option to keep Asomugha for the 2012 season at $16.8 million or the quarterback franchise tag number, whichever was higher. But Asomugha had a “little known” clause that said his deal would void if he didn’t achieve his not-likely-to-be-earned incentives in 2010.

Asomugha played fewer snaps in 2010 than 2009, and made fewer big plays. That voided the deal. So Asomugha’s quieter season works against the Raiders in a few ways.

The Raiders can’t stop Asomugha from leaving if he wants to go. The contract also says they can’t use the franchise or transition tag on him.

Only 30 and arguably the league’s best overall cornerback the last five years, Asomugha figures to become one of the highest paid defensive players in history whenever free agency starts up again.

Well this got to be a big disappointment to Raiders fans. After a pretty nice season which the team has showed improvements, their best player on defense is leaving.

Personally, I'd love to see my team the Eagles sign him and put him alongside Asante, would make for one helluva a pairing at the CB.

Poor Jon.:(

That's great for him. He'll finally be able to show his talents for a winner if he wants. It's too bad that Al Davis screws over his own team constantly too. He fired Tom Cable after their team went undefeated in their own division! Sure they didn't make the playoffs, but they haven't in years anyway, at least with him they were making decent strides toward becoming a winner. I'm not a raiders fan, but I feel bad for them since they have to deal with that, just like the clippers have to put up with Donald Sterling.

After he leaves, other veterans might also leave. That's the consequence for Al Davis firing Cable. It was a bone headed move and now they'll see Nmandi excel somewhere else. He might work in a system like Houston's since they cannot create pressure, they need cornerbacks that can play man on man, which is Nmandi's specialty.

Aso will stay cause he is very active in the community and he loves it there.
