Many people said the South wanted to start the war because of the ban of Slavery. I forgot what the other reason was, but why do you think the civil war was started?

There were many reasons for southern sucession but what started the civil war was when they tried to leave the union and start their own country.

No sitting government is going to allow a section of their country to leave without a fight.

The cause of the civil war was the fact the South's economy wasn't prepared to run without slavery and it went against there customs. They thought the North thought of slaves as to much of a person (they mention it in their constitution). It all comes down to slavery.

Yes, it was slavery. North thought it was wrong. South thought it was their precious way of life.

The South and North were getting along until the North tried to convince the South to stop slavery. Basically, the South got pissed and made laws requiring people from the North to help them catpure runaway slaves. Both sides got pissed and declared war. After the South was defeated, it led to the Reconstruction Era.

The North wasn't anti-slavery, nor was Lincoln. Many Northerners had a belief in "Free Soil" ideology, which is the opposition to the expansion of slavery. The South was obviously opposed to Lincoln's Free Soil beliefs, and so they seceded. The North wasn't going to go to war, Lincoln was willing to let them go but the South had to strike first. The battle at Fort Sumter however prompted the north to attack the south.

No single thing or event led to the Civil War. The outbreak of the war was the culmination of many reasons, it's impossible to say that any one of them singlehandedly caused the Civil War.

States that left the union did so because they felt their state rights were being infringed upon. Slavery being a common one.
