OVER 9000!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Dunno why I thought of this thread, I just thought some of you who don't live around this part of the world might like to know about some of it, a lot of crazy weather has been going on recently, including Tornadoes/Cyclones, Flash Flooding, Floods and Earthquakes... A lot of peoples homes and lives have been devastated by these disasters, and it has effected hundreds of thousands if not millions of people.

I will update this thread as the days go by, especially with the Christchurch New Zealand earthquake happening only 2 days ago, with more breaking news coming as the hours go by.

Update 1: Updated the NZ death toll... now 115+ :cry:

Update 2: NZ death toll = 145+ deaths.....

[multipage=Queensland Floods]
The first major disaster to strike as of recent to start it all off.. this was devastating, it was the most rainfall Queensland has gotten in years.

It all started in december of last year, and went into January. The worst part about said disaster was that it hit the States capital city Brisbane, with a population of over 2 million people, over 200000 people were directly effected by the floods. Three quarters of the ENTIRE state of Queensland was declared a DISASTER zone.
The damages were estimated to be that of over 1 billion Australian dollars, but not as bad as the population loss, 35 people were found dead, including babies and children, with an additional 9 people missing, it may not seem much, but any death is worse than no death, it's a very saddening thing for the community and for people to hear about.

The worst part that was it was extremely under-estimated, and that warning were aired on TV:

Here are some videos on the disaster, showing the massive devastation and the water in action.

You can see the immense force of the water, even pulling cars along with it.

Aerial View of the city:

Thankfully there were so many brave people helping, not just including rescue forces e.g. Firefighters, Police, S.E.S etc, but just normal people helping others through the tough times.

Here are some comparison pictures taken by my mate, before pics are from google maps.

Open the spoilers to see them.

This concludes the QLD floods section of this thread.

[multipage=Victorian Floods]

This started on the 12th of January 2011, Victoria received EXTREMELY high rainfall, causing rivers/basins to over flow and flooding to occur.

Most towns effected by this flood were also effected by flooding in September of 2010, which was not as severe, but any disasters are exactly that, a disaster.

This was said to be the worst flood events in Victorias history, and lived up to the phrase.

Fortunately during this flooding there was less deaths, only 2 were recorded, but still, any deaths are worse than no deaths.

The first death was of a boy who went missing on the 17th of January, and was found in the Goulburn River by a police diver.

The second death was that of a man who fell off the roof of his house, where he was trapped due to the extreme high water level and having no where else to possibly go.

Here are some videos showing some of the flooding, it is no where near as severe as that of what Queensland received, but it's worse than nothing.

[multipage=Queensland Cyclone Yasi]

Then came along Cyclone Yasi, as if Queensland hadn't already gone through enough, the people there still recovering, cleaning up the area and fixing all problems.

This hit Queensland on the 3rd of January early in the morning. The cyclone originated near the coast of Fiji before making its way to Australia. The cyclone got stronger and stronger on it's journey, originally thought to hit whilst it was a category 3 cyclone, but by the time it hit it was a Major Cyclone, fitting the criteria of Category 5.

News story:

The cyclone was not just wind, it also rained on QLD yet again, causing a lot of small floods/causing small areas to flood.

It also effected Australian farmers, ripping their crops from the ground and the immense rainfall also ruined the crops, resulting in extreme increases in food prices which will last for months.

The fortunate thing about this is compared to the other recent disasters is that I'm pretty sure there was only 1 death in the whole disaster, despite the severity of it. The death was due to asphyxiation, which happened because the person was using a portable power generator in a confined space inside.

This concludes the Cyclone Yasi section of this thread Winky Winky

[multipage=New Zealand Earthquake]
This is the most recent of the disasters, and probably the worst in regards to devastation and deaths. This started on the 22nd of February, just two days ago...

It happened in Christchurch, the 2nd-most largest city in New Zealand, commonly thought throughout the world to be the capital city due to it's size and popularity. It's estimated to have caused about 12 billion US dollars in damages (12 Billion $NZD).
It has been declared a National State of Emergency, the first ever to happen in New Zealand.

It only measured about 6.3 on the Richter scale, but due to it hitting a Major city, caused extreme damages.

Aerial video showing some of the damage:

Video filmed just 1 minute after the earthquake:

Buildings fell apart, some people even getting trapped under the buildings, unfortunately it's extremely unlikely that most once trapped will through it, some rescuers even being ordered to stop with that area due to it being hopeless and other areas in need of help.

The current death toll is at 95+(Update 1: 115+ deaths unfortunately) but it will definitely grow as the days go by, this only happened 2 days and there are thousands of people missing, not confirmed alive or dead. It is expected to soar above that of 300 deaths :(

It's great to know though that a lot of people are trying to help out, random people volunteering, going through all the rubble looking for any and all survivors.

Some more footage showing the aftermath and damage in progress:

[multipage=Thanks for reading]
Thank you to any and all that have looked at this thread Smile It has taken me a bit over an hour to do this, I'm not the smartest guy out, and I am dyslexic. Finished it just as NGU maintenance started xD, decided to add some more video footage and just wrote some more stuff during then to enhance the thread.

None of this is copied and pasted by the way Smile I did of course go on youtube and google to find correct statistics and information, and of course the videos though.

Once again, thanks for reading Smile

I think it's terrible news :(, what I said was GOLA made it interesting to read because he hasn't copied and pasted it. If it was news on a website I wouldn't have thought about reading the whole lot.

I never said it was good news I was mentioning the thread.

It is always good to read well constructed threads from members around the world and what is happening there.
One of my favorite things about NGU is reading posts and asking questions of people from around the world.
From down under, the middle east, the UK and western Europe, to Canada and people from the other side of my own country.
I love learning what is happening, what they think, how we are different and the same.
I wish that more could be like Andog and give mature reports on what's happening where they live, without being flamed by the ignorant that seem to live everywhere...

Nice post, man with the impossible name!!!
