First things first why would you want to convert MKV to avi. MKV is a superior format for video playback avi is shit. Unless you putting vides on to ipods or something then it has to be avi or is it mp4 I can't remember.

I normally use prism video converter demo version. It requires an internet connection and takes a while depending on the size of the video your converting
