Weekly Review: Week 2 Killzone 3[/u]
A full length review of Killzone 3
For those of you who may not know, about two months ago I did a thread where I reviewed ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ as a game and basically reviewed it. I did say as the title suggests I would be reviewing a game weekly by going out renting the game, then playing it for a week and then reviewing it when I was done. However I ended up getting swamped with school work and then I went on holiday to Russia and I kind of forgot after that. So anyway I thought I might try and start this up again, and this time I will try to keep doing it. Also if you want to see the original thread it is here, You must login or register to view this content. However this week we are reviewing the new PS3 game, ‘Killzone 3’.

[multipage=Plot] Once again, like in my original thread, I will copy the plot from Wikipedia, because for me I think they will give you a more in depth plot rather than me summarizing it.
So if you haven’t played it yet or you don’t want to know the story, I advise you to not open the spoiler
The game begins six months after the events of Killzone 2. Sev and Rico are disguised as Helghast (unbeknownst to the player) and have arrived at Stahl Arms Corporation, Jorhan Stahl's weapons factory. The two are taken to weapons training and then to an execution room where a captured Jason Narville's execution is about to be broadcasted by Stahl across Helghan. As the executioners (Sev and Rico) are about to execute Narville, they reveal their identity and fire at Stahl. The scene cuts before the shot hits Stahl revealing that this was a glimpse into the future.
Six months earlier, immediately following the events of Killzone 2, Sev and Rico regroup with Captain Jason Narville outside Visari's palace. They begin their evacuation towards the mushroom cloud in Pyrrhus, where the remaining ISA ships are situated. Together Sev and Rico encounter heavy resistance while they pass through Helghast museums and other cultural centers in a nuclear waste land. Upon reaching the the epicenter, Sev and Rico separate as Rico disobeys Narville's orders and proceeds to rescue Jammer and her squad who have encountered heavy resistance. As they arrive, the ISA ships depart or are destroyed by the Helghast leaving Narville, Rico, Sev, Jammer, and their men marooned on Helghan.
Jumping six months forward in time, the Helghast senate express their disappointment over the ISA's continued guerrilla resistance, ending with Chairman Jorhan Stahl leaving after a heated debate with Admiral Orlock over Visari's succession. After refusing to hand over his advanced weapons to the military, Stahl organizes his private army to hunt down the ISA. In an alien and dangerous Helghast jungle, Sev and Narville are seen in a make-shift camp. After a patrol goes dark and the camp loses contact with Earth, Sev and Kowalski move to the uplink located across the jungle. There they find that the Helghast have discovered their position and that their home world, Vekta, has surrendered. The ISA leadership then orders Narville to surrender to the Helghast to honor the surrender terms. Racing back to their main camp, Sev and Narville attempt to hold out while their men evacuate. Running out of ammunition the two are captured and their men are executed.
Proud of having captured Visari's murderers, Stahl's men broadcasts on an open channel allowing Rico and Jammer, who have been separated from the main group for six months, to rescue Sev. The two then proceed to save Narville. They track him to Stahl's base and discover a horrifying new weapon using irradiated Petrusite. Disguised as Narville's executioners, Sev and Rico rescue Narville in addition to freeing some of their men held as prisoners of war and used as test subjects for Stahl's new weapons. On their way out, Rico and Sev hack into the facility's computers, discovering Stahl's plan to destroy Earth and then chase Stahl to his cruiser near the Helghast orbital elevator.
Embarrassed by Sev and Rico, Orlock, who has now become Helghan's dictator, orders Stahl to turn over his new weapons to the Helghast military and to meet him at the orbital elevator, though he plans on killing Stahl anyways once he obtains the weapons. After meeting heavy resistance Narville, Sev, Rico arrive at the orbital elevator with only sixty remaining men. Stahl turns on Orlock, and demands Orlock's submission. Orlock refuses, leading Stahl to order his Cruiser to destroy most of the Helghast fleet in orbit. He then murders Orlock after a brief fight, and makes preparations to bombard Earth. Sev, Rico, Narville, Jammer and their remaining men hijack two of Stahl's fighters outfitted with a nuclear warhead and destroy Stahl's cruiser. The cruiser detonates inside Helghan's atmosphere, destroying the planet. Jammer remarks that Helghan has gone dark, as she cannot pick up any transmissions from the surface.
In a mid-credits scene, two Helghast soldiers are searching through some ruins when they come across an escape pod. Though the occupant's identity is not revealed, both soldiers bow and say, "Welcome home, sir." Given that there was no concrete evidence of Stahl's death, there may be a possibility that Stahl survived the explosion.
[multipage=The Pros]
Killzone which has just been released at the end of February sets a new type of feeling for the gamer, every action you do is immersive; the fighting is more consuming and energetic and this is what brings the new Killzone to life. It takes time for Killzone 3 to get into the swing of things but when it does it really is as you would say ‘brought to life’. Along with the admirable looking new set-pieces and an intense new multiplayer, Killzone 3 has some great aspects to it. The campaign tries to stay varied and does accomplish this very well, going from sneaking around in the snow outside a Helghast base, to having epic, action-packed firefights inside the base just minutes later, it also splits up the levels nicely from when you are on foot, or when you are kicking ass in a super powered vehicle. The game has some beautiful cut-scenes in the campaign as well as having some beastly new weapons for you to brandish. The graphics in both the campaign and the multiplayer maps are definitely one of the games strong points.
The multiplayer has to be the games main strong point as well as its graphics. With improved controls, amazing new weapons, and dramatic combat moments. The Killzone 3 multiplayer as expected will not end all other first-person shooters such as Call of Duty and Battlefield but it does rival them very well. Killzone 3 beats Black Ops very clearly on the graphics and it also beats Battlefield on the gamemodes and graphics side. So you could never say it is the best multiplayer FPS to date but it is in the top group of them. The multiplayer has a new grasp on the customization, where you can customize, upgrade your weapons and unlock new abilities and new weapons. You unlock your weapons, abilities, and unlocks with the point system, where if you increase in a rank you get a point. This adds quite a nice feel compared to the Black Ops ‘Cod Points’ system. Also the new maps have a very brash and edgy look upon other games. There is also a new botzone , which is really just an idea taken from Black Ops, who took it from Counter Strike but that does not matter does it, botzone is a great chance to practice your online skills on an offline status.
So all these points are very good reasons why Killzone 3 is a great game to have. [multipage=The Cons]
The problem with Killzone 3 is, there are quite a lot of cons. The first con is that the campaign story is inconsistent and quite weak. It is generally not very engaging and quite uninteresting. The levels do jump around a bit, like they are not even linked in some ways, as though they were made separately and then they tried to make a story around them. There also are quite a few plot holes, such as two main characters get knife wounds, however these wounds are unnoticed all through the story. The story is also rather short as well, almost like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, where you could complete the story in a couple of hours. The characters and their actions are also rather predictable and you can probably predict how the ending will play out when you near the end. The controls as with all the other Killzones are clunky. They have improved from the last game with the controls, however they are still bulky compared to other games.
The co-op gameplay is very disappointing and lacks any proper thought and time put into it. You cannot play online co-op, you can only play it in splitscreen which makes it even worse. There are also black bars cutting off parts of the screen which leave even smaller room for the split screens. The co-op is not worth being in the game as I do not see that many people will be playing it.
The multiplayer online has no real problems that are that big, the invisible ability can be quite annoying but that is just a miniature annoyance. So with the multiplayer there are no huge problems. [multipage=The Conclusion]
In conclusion, Killzone 3 is a very satisfying game but the campaign and co-op definitely leave you with a sense of wanting more. The graphics however make up for a lot of the game’s downfalls and the maps are magnificent in the look and feel of them. Also it has Move and 3D compatibility which are both great features, however sometimes the Move features can get a bit annoying such as the lunge to knife feature, can just end up with you messing up your aiming, however these are just small problems.
As long as you don’t depend on campaign for games too much then you should be fine because the multiplayer makes up for everything else.
Overall Killzone 3 is a great game, but like most games it has it’s failings.[/color]
