It is unlikely that a judge would hear the case or issue a penalty if there was not a prior history of assaults.
It sounds like it was severe and you did not act as a friend.
A better punishment would have been to allow the kid to give you the same and see your reaction.
Friends know the difference between pranks and abuse.
