The firm, which makes Heineken, Foster's, John Smith's and Kronenbourg, has not yet unveiled which brand will see its alcohol content reduced.

It has signed up to the Government's "responsibility deal", which includes major food and drink companies.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley wants firms to join the deal as a voluntary movement to reduce the amount of unhealthy sugar, salt and fat in food, and encourage people to drink responsibly.

Mr Lansley hopes measures aimed at better labelling and more information for consumers will eliminate the need for tough regulation.

As part of the announcement, Heineken, which also makes the ciders Bulmers and Strongbow, will carry information about alcohol units on all its branded drinking glasses.

Supermarket giant Asda has also pledged to end front-of-store alcohol displays by the end of April.

It will also commit £1 million to community projects for young people aimed at responsible drinking.

The drug and alcohol treatment charity Addaction will look into suitable schemes for the funds.

On Tuesday, Mr Lansley will unveil commitments made by around 150 other companies.

You can undo what damage junk food does- that's often not the case for alcohol.

Stop letting your addiction control you and accept alcohol(as well as nicotine) should be outlawed.

Alcohol being outlawed? That's crazy talk. I love how well the prohibition worked out, don't you? :carling:

I know the dangers of alcohol, and the massive amounts of death behind it, but outlawing alcohol would only make it worse. What's taboo is what tempts humanity. Alcohol is a man made disaster, just as religion and race.

Through what history shows us, man made disasters are by far harder to recover from than natural disasters. Outlawing alcohol would only make the people it want it more.

By that logic why not just make all the other drugs legal- cocaine, cannabis etc?

Your reply is irreverent to my statement. I didn't say anything about any other drugs, nor did I mention anything about legalization.

All I said was, outlawing alcohol wouldn't do shit but emphasize it.

My "logic" didn't promote any legalization. I said man made disasters are harder to reverse than natural ones.

What I mean is we should try to wean the world off of alcohol, because it's basically poison. It doesn't do any good.

I don't know how it'd be done, but honestly I think it's necessary.

My point in a way. Alcohol is mad made, thus, man made disasters are hard to reverse.

I honestly think a nice cold beer after a hard days work is relaxing. Binge drinking, underage drinking and such are the bigger problems. We need an escape, to get away from reality's bullshit. That's why people use substances, alcohol being one of them.
