“He thought he just swiped it from some random guy.” –Mark Bao
The thief who allegedly stole a laptop from Bentley University freshman Mark Bao had no idea what he was getting himself into.
Bao — who was featured on Metro’s cover in January for selling his viral website Threewords.me for six figures had his computer stolen from a dorm lounge in February. Fortunately, Bao uses an online file-backup service, Backblaze, which automatically uploads files online. That enabled Bao to find a video on his stolen laptop of the alleged thief dancing to Tynga’s “Make It Rain” — which Bao quickly posted onto YouTube. *
It had gotten 480,000 views by last night.
“I never really thought it would go that huge,” Bao said.
In fact, the clip got so much attention the thief returned the laptop to Bentley police and asked Bao to remove the video. A Bentley spokeswoman confirmed the man in the video is the thief and said campus police are considering pressing larceny and trespassing charges against the man, who isn’t a Bentley student.
Bao said there wasn’t much proprietary information on the stolen laptop because he hadn’t transferred data from his old computer.
“There wasn’t really anything he knew how to use,” Bao said of code written on the laptop. “There was nothing at risk. My current laptop, if I lost it, it would be pretty bad.”
Bao, who works weekends for a New York company that helps create iPad content, now uses software that helps locate, secure, lock and recover lost or stolen laptops.
“That was the first thing I did on my new laptop,” Bao said.
