I would agree, but for all that you need an expensive PC(more-so than consoles at least) and then there's the risk that if you get a virus you not only lose your computer but also your gaming too.
I built a gaming computer with 10gb of RAM, a video card that can play Crysis (one of the most visibly taxing games) at max settings, a dual core processor, and a motherboard it all works on for about $450. This is a device than can not only play games, but also download all kinds of files, watch movies, do projects, work, play music, and many other things.
Also, as long as you're using a decent antivirus, you shouldn't get any terrible viruses. And I've never heard of a virus that messes up a computer so bad that it can't be used anymore. There is always a way to get the computer working again. If a part fails, you can replace it without buying an entirely new computer. If your files are destroyed, you can still reformat your HDD and reinstall.
Personally, I think PC gaming is more convenient, but I tend to play PS3 more.
