KINEMATICS FOR KIDS!
In this project, you will investigate a topic in kinematics and prepare an illustrated children’s book, comic book or create a short video that presents the key concepts relating to your topic in a creative way!
The format is up to you! The goal is to clearly explain your topic in a way that grabs the interest of a student in grade 5 and helps them to understand the underlying kinematics
concepts!
TASK:
1. Choose a topic or technology related to kinematics from the list below or choose
your own topic (with teacher approval).
2. Decide on ONE question you would like to research and present in your final
product (storybook, comic, video, etc).
3. Research your question, recording your research information in jot note form.
Make sure to keep a detailed list of references used in APA format. Your jot notes and reference list will be submitted with your final product!
4. Create your final product in which you present the answer to your question in an interesting way. Your physics concept should be presented within the context of a story that will grab the interest of a child in Grade 5. The language used and the pictures or diagrams you include should be simple enough that they could easily read and understand the basic ideas!
5. Include two questions at the end of your story or comic that tests for understanding. These questions will be answered by your peers after they have read and evaluated your story!
Topics:
Sport Physics:
→baseball, basketball, volleyball, downhill skiing, cycling, bobsled, high jump etc.
Sample question: What factors produce a home run hit (e.g. maximum height, range) in baseball?
Motion technology Physics:
→GPS applications, accelerometers on WII game controls, accelerometers on IPhones;
Sample Question: How does an accelerometer on an IPhone determine the acceleration of a car?
Amusement Park Physics:
→Roller Coasters, Merry-go-Rounds, Drop Zone type rides
Sample Question: What factors help to make a roller coaster so exciting?
Bio-mechanical Applications of Physics:
→ gait analysis for physical therapy, biomechanics of artificial limbs
Sample Question: How is motion analysis of a person’s gait used to treat hip pain?
any ideas guys?
