Man it's much more then how close you follow, he seemed like he was far enough back. It's the speed at an item is projected.

I was with my friend when a bunch of debris came flying off a truck 4 lanes ahead of us, but the speed of the truck and our car caused for barely no reaction time. Lucky nothing went through his windshield just caved his hood in.
