This would be a really great scene for a movie about a young boy who leads a tough life growing up in Detroit whos parents just separated. His mother remarries but isn't happen, she only does it to make sure that the family will be financially secure. After intense characterization we come to find out that the act of marrying the new man was selfless because she wanted her son to grow up and be the first person in her family to go to college and make something of himself.
The mom commits suicide after we discover her m.o. and the boy is left with the step father who is abusive and alcoholic. We come to find out that the missing link is the boys legitimate father because a custody battle has been brewing since the death of the mother. The step father wins custody because the real father is unemployed, and the boy gets badly beaten soon after the trial dismisses.
The boy steals his car, drives to his dads house (in the rain for dramatic effect) and gives him a loving embrace. The father calls child services and has the step father arrested for beating the boy.
Flash forward 16 years, the boy is at college graduation and is graduating at the top of his class. He looks down and sees his father sitting next to an empty seat which reminds him of his mother. A tear falls down his eye. He commences a send-off speech to the rest of his class and details the hardships of his life. He receives the diploma, thrusts his hand into the air and everyone cheers.
