I'm loving those special effects, I'm hoping to be able to create at that level someday. Movie looks good not surprised the director from day after tomorrow is in there. As for the whole 2012 thing I'm don't necessarily believe it or think it's bogus. The idea of it is fun imo fun to think it's real fun to think it's fake and just another scary idea of how our world will end.
I just watched knowing with nicholas cage and it's about some little girl predicted all major events and a new event where our atmosphere I think (forget if it had anything to do with that in the movie) has depleted and we are no longer protected from the solar flares and aliens come to the earth to pick children from all over the earth to carry on the race on a new planet and everybody left on earth gets toasted by the solar flare.
Then you have Day after tomorrow where it's about the ice age essentially which was also pretty good but 2012 seems to cover most other theoretical disasters.

i loved the effects in knowing the plane crashing looked so real
