The first close-up images of an asteroid named Vesta from NASA's Dawn spacecraft have been beamed back to us at planet Earth.

Pictures like this were all that we had of Vesta before

Asteroid Vesta has only ever been viewed from afar till now. They feature Vesta's surface as never seen before; showing it's huge craters and bare but interesting landscape. Vesta is 330 miles wide, around a fifth the size of the moon or the size of England.

Dawn will continue to explore Vesta for the whole of this year, after then it will move onto another asteroid named Ceres. Ceres has an icy environment and is believed to hold frozen water because of this.

Dawn's liftoff back in 2007

Dawn's mission is all in aid of learning more about asteroids for a planned project to send a manned spacecraft to an asteroid in 2025.

I hope they find something interesting on Ceres. I think I read somewhere a while ago that they are going to go there in 2015?
