I think the conversion from VHS to DVD really put them down. After the conversion came the pirated DVDs and more people became aware of downloading movies etc.
With the competition stores (like rogers who throws incentives for having cell phones etc with them too) they lost a lot more business. (not to mention the other shops) they lost more business. Finally Netflix etc came out and they had nothing left.
