A field contains x cattle and y chickens.

A) How many heads altogether were in the field?
B) How many legs did all the cattle have together
C) How many legs in the field?
D) if there were 50 heads altogether and a total of 140 legs, write two equations x and y
E) Solve the equations from D) to find x and y.

Btw I have the answer here in my book.

A) x+y
B) 4x
c) 4x+4y
d) impossible. heads altogether = 40, 150 heads? some must have 2 heads...
e) d is impossible, therefore e is impossible.

thats about it

X+Y
4x
4x+2y

140 legs
50 heads

30x (x=4)
20y (y=2)

:confused:

basicly theres 30 cattle and 20 chickens?

Nope. you gotta do it in simultaneous equations.

You've made a silly mistake. All leters are in alphabetic order.

XY
4x
4x+2y

140 legs
50 heads

4x+2y = 140
x+y = 50

x = 50 - y

200 - 4y + 2y = 140

200 - 2y = 140

y = 30

4x + 60 = 140
4x = 80
x = 20

y=30
x=20
