Shit when I was in highschool gas was $1 a gallon. I'd always "treat" my car and buy premium for $1.10. They shot up so fast, GM and MoPar practically went bankrupt. I remember seeing pickup trucks going for $15,000 off msrp. The Nissan Titan in particular, was going for HALF-OFF msrp. That's a $40,000truck, out the door for 20.
Roads in England are smaller, it just doesn't make sense to driver a big car. Big trucks and fast cars go hand in hand in America. It's our culture. That's how we started out, with the muscle cars and trucks. Back in the day, you could get a 400 cubic inch. in a family car. A lot of people need trucks, hauling and towing is very important here. The ability to go offroad is useful to many people.
Government regulation plays into it too. For years the government practiced salutary neglect towards the auto industry. In Britain, I'd imagine there is more. The U.S. imports a lot more oil; but also, oil is drilled domestically. But now a gas prices rise, the government is making more mandates.

lol I wish I got 40MPG. I do like 20-23 depending on how I drive. Even if I baby the throttle, I still wouldn't get 40MPG, not even on the freeways.

I know it doesn't seem like much compared to what you guys pay, but, it is when you look at how cheap gas is for people in Saudi and shit.
It's different in some areas of the country, It's 3.19 in Alabama while it could be 4 in California or New York.

It used to be around $2 over here, but now it's just going up and down a couple cents every few days from $4.
