Seeing as NGU is involved in this movement (like me), I wanted to make sure that everybody understood what this "censorship" thing is al about.

~~Updating everytime i get more news~~

What is SOPA? Why is it important?

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) has been proposed by the US government in october 2011, its objective is to help fight copyright infragment material. (**Basically you wont be able to download your favorite movies,tv shows, music, FACEBOOk,TWITTER,etc) You might bbe worndering why would facebook, twitter, any website to stream online movies etc be blocked. Its simple, if SOPA gets approved it would have a very hard time to control these websites from spreading the copyright material so they will ahve to be shut down.SOmething i want to make very clear is that not only will it stop the copyright infragment but it will also stop freedom of speech For example, lets say that a reporter uploads important news to youtube it will be blocked, or even worse if he writes his news in a blog and links it youtube or a website that SOPA doesnt approved that website will be blocked as well.

Whats bad about illegal downloads being stopped?
Im not going to take sides here, this is personal opinion. I believe that every author deserves money for their hard work. But also there is people that simply dont have the access to certain programs other people have. SO the only way they can get them is by downloading them illegally.

 Im not in america WHY SHOULD I CARE?

It will affect you not directly exactly. However most sites have an american DOMAIN that will still stop you froma ccesing it even tho you are not in america.

"HA! I will just use VPN :mask:
Sorry to break it to you, but what gets blocked is the website so using VPN wont make a difference

:wtf::wtf::wtf:How can i acces them if this does happen? HOW CAN I STOP IT?:wtf::wtf::wtf:
The only way that occurs to me (please share if you have any other ideas) is by ip adress.

How can you stop it. The only real way is by supporting all the people against it
Two websites that help prevent this awful law from beign approved

The Internet fought back to protect the Internet — and we won, for now. We have to assemble our Internet army for next year, when this bill will come up again.

i agree... people aren't against it because it would stop piracy (in general) but rather, the effects of that... such as websites like facebook, and even NGU being blocked.

Exactly.

Alongside problems such as sites taking on their users' content in terms of posting copyrighted content, there's also the issue that the government is in the pocket of the media industry and they have a habit of abusing their power.

You piss off a big business, enjoy seeing your site get taken down, i.e. censorship.

1) Piracy isn't stealing, it's copying. Big difference as it means the publisher doesn't get hurt everytime you pirate something. Whilst I think people who can afford to buy stuff should do so, I find it unfair to penalize someone who can't afford something, who then goes on to copy it for his own use. Nobody gets hurt under that scenario, and not only does said person get the software he wanted but he may also inform his friends of it who may be in a situation to buy it themselves.
2) You must be incredibly naive if you think the US government won't abuse the power over the internet this bill will give them.

1) There is absolutely no difference in the way about you go about doing it, it is stealing. That isn't to say I don't pirate software music, films etc. myself but whether you're downloading it from a peer-to-peer network or stealing the CD from the shop; it has the same outcome. The publish is hurt because instead of buying the CD you're downloading it for free.

2) In what way do you think they would abuse this power? Which websites do you think they would close down that they wouldn't anyway?

I'm against this bill, but that's simply because of my own selfish reasons - not any moral ground.

1) If you steal a CD you cost the publisher money. If you pirate MP3s you're merely copying the data. I understand your point, but most people who mass-pirate like myself simply can't afford to buy any of this stuff. I do have a problem though with people who can afford to buy stuff legitimately but pirate anyway.

2) The US government is in the pocket of the media industry, so as an example, if you piss off a big media company you could find your site blocked. Censorship. If you expose stuff in a similar manner to the way in which Wikileaks did, you'll find your site blocked. Censorship.

Well Will NGU be taking a blackout for this cause?

that is a good point, i've never thought of it in that way... if i went out and stole a CD, im costing the developer money (the case and the disc would have cost money) whereas download an MP3 doesn't actually take money away from the artist, but rather stops them making as much money... Claps

however your second point is a little bit... unfair..
so people who work hard to make money, should have to buy anything, simply because you do not?

How can you say it's unconstitutional if you won't even take the time to learn what it is?

Your logic is that of a child's. I don't like a lot about SOPA, but at least I know what I'm against.

Read the constitution and the SOPA bill, then tell me your opinion.

Oh, but wait! "TL; DR." So how do you expect anyone to care about your opinions if they're based on ignorance? You have fun trying to prosecute someone with false intellect and misunderstanding.

Piracy causes software developers, musicians, and many other people to lose a lot of money. Piracy is the theft of intellectual property, which is just as unethical as stealing tangible property.

Ex:
DMCA - Anti-Piracy portion of SOPA
The First Amendment protects Freedom of Speech, HOWEVER, obscenity is not protected. - Censorship portion of SOPA

So you think sites like NGU, Youtube, Google, etc... should suffer for their users?

Read the 80 page write up of the bill, and tell me where it says NGU, YouTube, and Google will suffer. People need to stop assuming and learn the facts.
