Seeing as NGU is involved in this movement (like me), I wanted to make sure that everybody understood what this "censorship" thing is al about.

~~Updating everytime i get more news~~

What is SOPA? Why is it important?

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) has been proposed by the US government in october 2011, its objective is to help fight copyright infragment material. (**Basically you wont be able to download your favorite movies,tv shows, music, FACEBOOk,TWITTER,etc) You might bbe worndering why would facebook, twitter, any website to stream online movies etc be blocked. Its simple, if SOPA gets approved it would have a very hard time to control these websites from spreading the copyright material so they will ahve to be shut down.SOmething i want to make very clear is that not only will it stop the copyright infragment but it will also stop freedom of speech For example, lets say that a reporter uploads important news to youtube it will be blocked, or even worse if he writes his news in a blog and links it youtube or a website that SOPA doesnt approved that website will be blocked as well.

Whats bad about illegal downloads being stopped?
Im not going to take sides here, this is personal opinion. I believe that every author deserves money for their hard work. But also there is people that simply dont have the access to certain programs other people have. SO the only way they can get them is by downloading them illegally.

 Im not in america WHY SHOULD I CARE?

It will affect you not directly exactly. However most sites have an american DOMAIN that will still stop you froma ccesing it even tho you are not in america.

"HA! I will just use VPN :mask:
Sorry to break it to you, but what gets blocked is the website so using VPN wont make a difference

:wtf::wtf::wtf:How can i acces them if this does happen? HOW CAN I STOP IT?:wtf::wtf::wtf:
The only way that occurs to me (please share if you have any other ideas) is by ip adress.

How can you stop it. The only real way is by supporting all the people against it
Two websites that help prevent this awful law from beign approved

  • You will have to pay for warez
  • Your freedom of speech rights will be abused
  • Even though ur not in america it WILL STILL AFFECT U!
  • Might harm the development of future websites

The Internet fought back to protect the Internet — and we won, for now. We have to assemble our Internet army for next year, when this bill will come up again.

Here's the thing, for companies as big as Microsoft, it's imperative for them to be against it.
The reason is that unknown to many and possibly some on here, there is actual freeware that
is essentially the same as Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc. Freeware is great because, well,
its free. And is identical in function to what the name-brand software does. (Like Microsoft Office for example)
If Microsoft has a smart business sense, they'll know that if SOPA is passed, it'll ruin sales and business.
Think about it, why else would Microsoft be against it? It's certain that they are against piracy,
but I believe that its not as big a deal to them as some may think. People torrent Microsoft Office and such because
its a Microsoft product, and because its good. People torrent things that they like. As a result, maybe that downloader
might even go out and buy a retail copy of M.Office or whatever they're using.

Now, imagine if Microsoft was "blacklisted" or got shut down.
(Please remember this is strictly hypothetical and I have haven't thought of a
proper example or situation that would cause this, but for now just go with it)
Now, Microsoft gets "blacklisted" and users are discouraged from purchasing or torrenting it in fear of consequences.
Sales go down, users download freeware similar to M.Office, and in turn no longer use Office anymore or any brand-name
software that they have used before. Because there is freeware out there that does everything that priced software
already does.

Now this is just theory and being hypothetical, but think of all the cause and effect that results from this.

And as for personal opinion, I refute SOPA. Sorry E-Cops, but I love my free music :carling:
And to those who think I leech, I support my artists by buying an actual copy of the CD at the store if its
one of my favorite bands and if the album is worth buying to play in the car.
And if I'm really supportive, I'll pay to see them live :y:

Has been a while
For those of you who are trying to implement a code of "ethics" into the act of pirating and referring to it as "stealing" let me tell you this... life is not fair. You pay for your music/movies while someone else just pirates them for free and you are complaining that it's not fair? Too bad. Life is solely based on opportunity cost. If you chose to purchase your music/movies legally that means you have followed the law, but the cost of that is that you had to spend your money. While the person who decided to pirate that same exact music/movie would have gotten them for free, but the cost of that is that person now has a chance getting into trouble with the law. But in the pirater's case the consequences of his actions will never come to light because hundreds of millions of people do it every day and it is impossible for a law enforcing agency to take down all these wrongdoers. It is a simple matter of utilizing and maintaining your money the best way possible. Why spend $20 on something I can just download off the internet for free. Who cares if we pirate music/movies off the internet... the fat cats in the corporate world still get their millions/billions of dollars regardless of all the pirating; they just want to maximize their profits and utilize/maintain their money JUST LIKE US.

~Kudos to those who spend their scarce/limited money source on purchasing things they can simply get for free with just a few clicks away. Their consciences must be very clear and their moral code of ethics must stand really strong... I bet those people give homeless people on the street $1 and feel like they are some charitable/kind/gracious person that made some sort of difference by giving that homeless person a mere one dollar bill.

Don't quote me with nonsense about ethics please Not Happy or Sad Code of Economics > Code of Ethics

"Does this mean I'm going to stop? No"... With that you have just undermined your whole argument, this quote is a perfect example of the type of mentality those have that are opposed to SOPA. This is why restrictions will be issued on the internet sooner or later - it is the only way to stop people pirating.

You may have hate for this bill and the representatives that set it up as you believe it will wreak "your" internet. Perhaps though you should take a look at yourself, to discover that you are part of the vast catalyst that has helped towards creating your own restrictions. You only have yourself to blame for that.

1) With that quote you've taken what I said out of context. Combine it with everything else I was saying and suddenly I look like a lot less of a stealing so and so.
2) The internet is one of the greatest inventions in recent times and the US government wants the ability to block sites at will. This is censorship. If it was actually about blocking piracy, there are much more efficient ways of doing it that don't undermine freedom of speech and expression among other things.

i agree... people aren't against it because it would stop piracy (in general) but rather, the effects of that... such as websites like facebook, and even NGU being blocked.
