Seems like you are a little confused on what self defense means. Yeah the punk hit you but you don't always need to hit back, you could of walked away & if he came at you again then whoop his ass and don't stop beating him down untill someone pulls you off of him. Try your best to not fight back unless you HAVE to.

I woulda done the the same thing. If he talked shit about you, and he comes and hits you out of the blue, then hit him to show that your not someone thats just gonna take the insults and not do anything about it. Chances are people will see that you wont take shit from someone else by doing that.
But as Lady said, fighting isn't needed all the time, but some times you gotta get your point across.

Legally, any time violence is brought upon you and you defend yourself, it is self defense. The extent of your defense is what makes the difference between assault and self defense.
For example, if some guy punches you once, then you pull out your knife and kill him, you are going to be convicted of either murder 2 or voluntary manslaughter.
The best bet is to avoid the confrontation all together, but legally, if you are a victim of a violent act, you have every right to subdue your attacker to protect yourself. A quick punch to the neck, temple, or kidney will do the trick. If your attack drops, do not continue to attack him; he is no longer a threat.
However, you're just in school. The rules are vastly different. You fight, you get punished. Hell, schools now punish you if you watch. But it's just school, everybody will get in a fight at one point or another. Just go kick his ass and let him know you aren't gonna take shit, or you'll regret it later.
