Eh that involves more of the armed forces then whats going on in our country and economy. So yes, he has alot of power in that sense, but on other more important issues, he is nothing more then another voice in the crowd.
The president is one man who can veto a bill passed by 535 men in Congress. That's pretty damn powerful to me. If Congress is 51:49, every bill the president wants to pass gets passed, and he can stop any bill he wants. He can give any man a pardon and issue executive orders.
The president makes up the budget, which basically allows him to put money into whatever he wants.
Yes, Congress has a lot of power, but the president can reject Congress, just as Congress can reject the president his. The powers are balanced.
