As many as 73 people were killed and hundreds injured on Wednesday after a pitch invasion at a football match in the Egyptian city of Port Said, health ministry officials said.
One player described the incident as “a war, not football”.
The game was between Al Ahli, one of Egypt’s most successful clubs, and al-Masry, a team based in Port Said. Live television footage showed fans running onto the field and chasing Ahli soccer players.
Ahli player Mohamed Abo Treika described the violence as war as Masry fans invaded the pitch after the referee blew the whistle, even though the team had beaten Ahli 3-1.
“This is not football. This is a war and people are dying in front of us. There is no movement and no security and no ambulances,” Abo Treika told the Ahli television channel. “I call for the premier league to be cancelled. This is horrible situation and today can never be forgotten.”
State television quoted Hesham Sheiha, deputy health minister, as saying that most of the injuries were caused by concussion and deep cuts.
Another match in Cairo was halted by the referee after receiving news of the violence in Port Said, prompting fans to set parts of the stadium on fire, television footage showed.

They could just pay a little extra money for security, but it's all about the money. Paying a player $20 million is more important than paying a few thousand a game for security to protect the fans from things like this.

I agree with 100%, also this two teams are the biggest violent rivals!
The should learn from their mistakes & hopefully wont happen again

Only 70 were killed and 46 were injured. One of those who was killed was a dear friend of mine.
Also, it's not about security who ever said that. The stadiums in Egypt are always secured. If you actually watch the news you would know that Egypt is in a security situation because of the protestors that are against the army and police. The police let people from outside the stadium inside so it causes chaotic incidents.

No, I am saying to hire a private security firm to be there for occassions like these, on the inside. The police search for weapons and whatnot from entering, people still have their fists inside. Hire 50 big brawny guards at $100 a night for a 3 hour event. That's only $5,000 a game. That's nothing to prevent things like this.

You still don't get it though. They didn't want any security in the match. El Ahly (the guys wearing red) are the best Club in Africa. Even the private security won't do anything. Everything is a matter of money in Egypt, you can't trust anyone.

They don't want safety? Well that's their choice. Security breaks up fights in games here in America, even if the best teams are playing. Just the presence intimidates many would-be wrongdoers.
