My heart goes out to you. I am also writing a research paper, but it will be written in the persuasive mode meaning I have to take a side and dispute opposing views. When it comes to the history of the automobile, though, I assume the purpose of your paper is purely to educate the reader.

Your thesis could be something simple like this:

Things change as time goes by, and the automobile is no exception.

or something a bit more complex:

People are constantly making their way from one place to another and have been since the beginning of time. However, since the invention and continued innovation of the automobile, land travel has not only become less time consuming, but it has also become more convenient.
