From my understanding it is not to be used like it is in COD.

It is more like c4, and is not actually thrown like a grenade. Someone on another site suggested that in COD the player actually grips the tape (which is probably holding the blast cap).

It's plastic explosives, like C4. Not something you'd throw around like in CoD.

I assume they started having it after the sticky grenade in world at war. When MW2 came, a sticky grenade would be to old fashion, but they needed something with the same purpose and qualities. And that ladies and gentlemen, is how I think the semtex ended up in CoD.
