Most coaches should be like this actually. I hope that it's not too serious however, like he isn't going the extra mile to make you upset so that you start wanting to punch him in the face right? It's just that you think he is being hard on you?
He is trying to push you harder and harder, it's something that you should be happy about actually. Rarely do I see people say "Get up and do it again" instead they say things like "Oh it's okay you tried your best" etc. etc.
For the most part it's a good thing that he is trying to push you. Trust me you will learn a very valuable lesson in life. I know I did when my parents freaked over 80's in school. He is someone who does not like to encourage mediocrity, I'm not saying you are average, I am saying that he knows you can do better and better if you push yourself further and further and be able to do your very best.
This is really a lesson that should be enforced much more often in today's society. America has too many "average" people. People who just barely get there in life but are nevertheless content. America did not get to where it was through encouraging mediocrity. They wanted people to push and do their absolute best when it came to anything.
He is pushing you and he wants you to succeed I believe. I know how you feel about him being a dick, but I learned a lot from having people push me a lot through life. I really hope this makes sense to you, because like everyone you have the potential to do better, but of course it's important to use that potential in the correct manner.
It's either that, or he is just a grade A dick. Unless he does things purposely to make you feel like he is a dick, he isn't trying to be one. Like your post stated, he was amazed that you pulled off your best lap, and he wants you to do even better because he knows that you can.
