Facebook is the leading cause of [s]identity theft[/s] divorce in the United States, although some critics claim that bad relationships might be the leading cause of divorce.

Facebook is best known for it's ability of easily distributing private individual about a person on legal grounds. As of 2011, Facebook claims to have brought more than 750 million unique personal information entries, called profiles, that it sells to its clients on a regular basis. These clients include, but are not limited to:
  • Advertisers
  • You must login or register to view this content.
  • Authoritarian governments
  • Private individuals

Features

Strong data retention
It is very difficult for users to remove personal information from Facebook's servers, as simply closing an account will not delete anything. Facebook assures its clients that once it collects personal information, it is stored permanently.

No confusion about data ownership
Facebook's Terms of Service, to which users must agree when creating an account, automatically give Facebook complete ownership of anything that is posted on the site. Clients do not need to be concerned about potential ownership or copyright issues that may arise from acquiring users' personal data, as Facebook owns it and can do whatever it wants with it.

One central, convenient data storage location
It is not possible to export personal information from Facebook in a way that is compatible with competing services, such as Myspace or Google+. Facebook's use of vendor lock-in ensures that clients need not look anywhere else for all their data-mining needs.

Great deals!
Occasionally, Facebook will host promotions wherein certain information on all profiles is made public for free, even if it was private before. These changes in privacy settings essentially represent free gifts to the advertising community, which in turn helps attract potential customers to Facebook.

An unmatched selection of profiles to choose from
Facebook has over 750 million profiles, each of which hosts information about a given individual. However, thanks to image tagging, Facebook also has profiles on millions of people who are not on Facebook. Facebook claims that no competitor can offer such an extensive selection.

Use custom applications to fill your specific needs
All Facebook customers are invited to publish their own applications, which users can add to their profiles. This allows clients to customize the personal information that is gathered from users.

Reception
Facebook has become wildly popular, having overtaken Myspace in April 2008, and has received worldwide acclaim in the media. It has been praised for its exceptional customer service, its ease of use, and its complete lack of discrimination with regards to its [s]business partners[/s] user base. It is ranked by You must login or register to view this content. as the second most popular website in the United States, behind competitor Google. In 2007, PC Magazine ranked Facebook among its top 100 data-mining websites. As of 2010, Facebook had won Crunchies "Best Overall Startup or Product" award for three years in a row.

The unwashed masses, from which Facebook harvests its personal information, have had mixed reactions to the site. Some regard Facebook as the pinnacle of human evolution, and in February of 2011, an Egyptian couple named their daughter after the site. In May of the same year, an Israeli couple named their daughter after Facebook's "like" feature. On the opposite end of the spectrum, a number of critics have denounced Facebook as a tool of the New Corporate One World Order, and warned that its continued popularity will contribute to the downfall of civilization as we know it.

In 2008, the Collins English Dictionary officially declared "facebooking" to be a word, which means "selling your soul to pretend you have a lot of friends."
