(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Apparently being gay does run in the family -- the DC Comics family, at least. Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern and the father of gay superhero Obsidian, will be relaunched as a gay character next week as part of the "Earth 2" reboot of its older superheroes.

"The original version of Alan Scott was an older man, and he had a superpowered son, Obsidian, who was gay," writer James Robinson tells Entertainment Weekly. "The fact that Scott was young now [thanks to a universe-wide reboot] meant Obsidian no longer existed. I thought it was a shame that DC was losing such a positive gay character. I said, “Why not make Alan Scott gay?”

NPR comics blogger Glen Weldon explains it thusly: "Basically, DC just wiped Kurt Hummel from existence & made a young, hot Burt Hummel a star of the glee club. (NOTE: Really not a complaint.)"

For those keeping track at home, this particular Green Lantern is not the Green Lantern played by Ryan Reynolds last year. That was test pilot Hal Jordan, whose girlfriend (not beard!) was played by Blake Lively. I believe the roller coaster is still straight as well.

Robinson describes the new Scott as a billionaire media titan, "kind of a cross between Mark Zuckerberg and David Geffen. The original Alan Scott owned a radio station in the ’40s and ’50s, so he was a media giant then. He was this bold, heroic, brave man who took control, who would risk his life for you and be this emerald knight that was always there to protect the world. The Alan Scott I’m doing now is that same dynamic, brave, honorable man. A man that you’d want guarding your welfare, your children, your life, your home. He’s willing to give his life for the world. He’s everything you want in a hero. And he happens to be gay."
DC
The Green Lantern's alter-ego Alan Scott greets his boyfriend Sam after a long trip in the second issue of DC Comics' "Earth 2" series.

Other gay superheroes include Northstar, one of the X-Men in the Marvel Universe, who recently proposed to his longtime boyfriend, and DC's Batwoman, who is a lesbian.

The prospect of a same-sex mutant wedding in a fictional comics universe, along with rumors that one of the DC superheroes would be revealed as gay, has gotten the conservative Christian group One Million Moms in a lather: "Children desire to be just like superheroes. Children mimic superhero actions and even dress up in costumes to resemble these characters as much as possible. Can you imagine little boys saying, "I want a boyfriend or husband like X-Men?" This is ridiculous! Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don't but do want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light."

Hells
I'm Back...
The words fucking retarded come to mind, lets make a character gay because it's the pc thing to do, why not just make a new character and make him gay?
Infact why does he/she have to be gay or straight, let him/her have to be anything other than a crime fighting super hero or villan?

Level 2 Trustworthy
I just feel like this is a PR stunt. I don't give a flying fuck if DC makes a new gay superhero. By all means go ahead but don't fuck up an existing storyline to appeal to the gay community. That's just retarded.
