I can't see them taking such severe safety precautions if there wasn't even a slight threat made. Has it been like this at all other Olympics events or is it just now they've inevitably decided to take such measures?

I would have to agree with xinfected. There will be threats made but there will be lots of preparation taken to make sure nothing goes wrong.
