i counted 40.
am i right?
pretty sure i'm right.

1 entire square =1
16 little squares =17
2 squares in the middle =19
4 squares in each of those middle squares = 27
9 groups of 4 of the 16 squares = 36
4 groups of 3x3 squares = 40
