Post: Next step in human evolution?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A friend asked me this question, what would you think the next step in human evolution will be? Keep in mind that for another step in evolution to occur, there must be a threat to human survival; such as food source, etc.

I agree with some of that said above, in that natural selection has been stalled/halted (which is not necessarily negative).

We don't have biological "survival of the fittest" anymore, because children born with birth defects or other problems can get medical help to live longer- even long enough to reproduce.

We don't have much natural selection for reproduction either, since our society expects almost everyone to get married and have children.

Soon, we will have true gene manipulation, and people will be able to reshape their bodies however they want, completely placing us outside of evolution.

I completely agree with you, if anything I think it will be very small meaningless changes. For example if you look at the past few hundred years we have gotten a bit taller, we really have no reason to be taller as we as a species don't NEED to be tall. So it's meaningless. I believe that more things like this will happen, but noting life changing.

Nice post!

On what basis do you say that? Modern society and modern medicine etc have only been going for a very short amount of time, and [this'd be easier to put into words if I re-read about evolution, damn it, but you know what I mean, isn't this just a hunch?].

With modern 1st world societies medications people couldn't have dreamed about only 300 years ago are available at our local pharmacy. We have people who specialize in every field of biology, and offer solutions to those have problems in those fields. ******* disorders that would have died out continue living due to being able to keep those with those disorders living. Those who are the brightest in the world often hold no advantage over less bright. Manipulative ones continue to hold power over others (nothing new here).

Onto your actually question about it being a hunch, I'd rather call it a hypothesis. Your right in that I can't show much for it right now, hell not even in my lifetime. But based on the evidence, as of right now I'll say that natural selection has been more so halted.

well i remember Michio Kaku is saying that humans have stopped evolving. in a video. but personally seeing so many things humans can do. such as in stanlee's superhuman. we will probably enhance our sensors and basic skills as next phase of evolution.
