You don't need any education to become a cop. You just need to pass a test asking you which side of the law you're on.
This isn't news to me, but it got me thinking. Maybe if there were higher requirements for becoming a police officer there would be less abuse and misuse of power and authority.

Actually, not that many police officers have to go to college. It all depends on what you want to be. If you where going to be a forensic scientist, detective, or a police chief, then yes, that would more then likely require a degree in Criminal Justice or an equivalent, however, if you're just wanting to be a beat/city cop, then you would pretty much just need a high school diploma.

Most police officer training is just Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) and the classes vary from state to state, and how long the classes are varys on where you take the class at. It also cost, but here in my state, (Oklahoma) you can actually sign an agreement with the OSBI (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation) that you will be in law enforcement for at LEAST 3 years and you can take CLEET for free, and it wont cost a penny for you. Some companys also pay for your CLEET as well, but as I said, it varys from state to state.

How hard is it to pull people over and write tickets. really. Does a cop need a masters degree in English to be able to write a ticket or 100s of hours of racing experience to pull people over?

In my country you need to train to became a cop, plus you do alot of tests for it. But i guess is different in other places.

Wow I didn't know you could become a cop with just a high school diploma, but I guess it makes sense that that's all they require (other than training with a firearm and knowing the laws). I respect most cops greatly though since they do things I would never want to do. Same with the men and women who serve in the armed forces.

Please don't compare becoming a cop to becoming a doctor. Those things are nothing alike with training, education etc.

The big thing here is what county are we talking about. I can tell you in my city, with around 300,000 people in it, you need to go to a 2 year college minimum to become a police officer. I can almost guarantee this will be true with any other medium to large sized city. This could easily be a position in a middle-of-nowhere type town in Indiana with around 100 people living in the city. As much as I hate cops, you have to actually consider possibilities.

You have a valid point here. I was half way through typing a reply saying something along the lines of "But you don't trust a cop with a possibly lethal procedure or prescribing a possibly lethal drug to someone, doctors do so much more," when I realized the complete idiocy of that statement. We basically give these cops a gun, which can kill and injure.
