Utopia: A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics,
laws, customs, and conditions.

Dystopia: A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and
the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic,
technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated
worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or
political system.

Characteristics of a Dystopian Society

• Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society.
• Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.
• A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society.
• Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.
• Citizens have a fear of the outside world.
• Citizens live in a dehumanized state.
• The natural world is banished and distrusted.
• Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad.
• The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

Types of Dystopian Controls
Most dystopian works present a world in which oppressive societal control and the
illusion of a perfect society are maintained through one or more of the following

types of controls:
• Corporate control: One or more large corporations control society through
products, advertising, and/or the media. Examples include Minority Report
and Running Man.

• Bureaucratic control: Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through
a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government
officials. Examples in film include Brazil.

• Technological control: Society is controlled by technology—through
computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix,
The Terminator, and I, Robot.

• Philosophical/religious control: Society is controlled by philosophical or
religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic
government.

The Dystopian Protagonist
• often feels trapped and is struggling to escape.
• questions the existing social and political systems.
• believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society in which he
or she lives.
• helps the audience recognizes the negative aspects of the dystopian world
through his or her perspective.

No but that US does face massive social issues ahead and needs to deal with them.
US is quite bipolar one side you have people on the left and other side people on the right.

What path the US goes depends if it forced to deal with these issues or kicks the can down the road. US is quite unequal so the kick already quite big.

Yeah, but they only up there because the people hold them up there. If humanity wake up the control structure will crumble.

The potential for a dystopian society to rise exists, and certainly does persist. Actually, one could reasonably argue that society is already in the premature stage of dystopia; it simply doesn't realize the transformation because it's blinded by the illusion of liberty and free-will. I certainly believe that the United States will inevitably experience change in its socio-political climate very soon- the process is just too gradual and gentle for human minds to instantly notice.

I don't think it will ever develope all of the qualities of a Dystophian society but it has and will develope more qualities of a Dystophian society. Things like this make me fear what the future holds for us and I don't see a change coming unless people decide that being educated on things like this and other things going on with the government, politics, etc. is important.

It isn't so much our own limitation(s), I think it's more-so that people are so pre-occupied with their social lives, work and television and other forms of media that they just don't pay enough attention politically.

Also, given that schools are supposed to educate you, they do very, very little to educate on all that politicians have a tendency to do wrong, so a lot of young people go out into the world to have their naivety exploited and be lied to.

That's just how I see it.

Out of curiosity, am I the only one who thinks a violent uprising against politicians and those aligned with them is the only thing that'd work at this point? I hate violence, but I really believe that nothing can be changed politically any more, at least not legitimately speaking.

"Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information and religions destroy spirituality."
— Michael Ellner
That quote right there explain what is wrong with society.
