(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Dystopias: Definition and Characteristics
Utopia: A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics,
laws, customs, and conditions.

Dystopia: A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and
the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic,
technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated
worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or
political system.

Characteristics of a Dystopian Society

• Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society.
• Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.
• A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society.
• Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.
• Citizens have a fear of the outside world.
• Citizens live in a dehumanized state.
• The natural world is banished and distrusted.
• Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad.
• The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

Types of Dystopian Controls
Most dystopian works present a world in which oppressive societal control and the
illusion of a perfect society are maintained through one or more of the following

types of controls:
• Corporate control: One or more large corporations control society through
products, advertising, and/or the media. Examples include Minority Report
and Running Man.

• Bureaucratic control: Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through
a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government
officials. Examples in film include Brazil.

• Technological control: Society is controlled by technology—through
computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix,
The Terminator, and I, Robot.

• Philosophical/religious control: Society is controlled by philosophical or
religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic
government.

The Dystopian Protagonist
• often feels trapped and is struggling to escape.
• questions the existing social and political systems.
• believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society in which he
or she lives.
• helps the audience recognizes the negative aspects of the dystopian world
through his or her perspective.

it's pretty obvious two parties in the same house couldnt split apart or fight eachother 24/7 or we would never get anywhere, same goes for any first world country on this planet though
the problem is nobody really knows what they can do or where to start, plenty of other people just seem beyond educating
this makes me want to read 1984 again but I already draw enough daily parallels to that book anyways...

Sad to say but we were dystopian pretty much since the beginning of civilization. As long as we're human there will always be hunger for power and selfishness, there are lies everywhere you look.

love your Eagle Globe and anchor.. But as for saying Future Marine Soldier. I myself am actually a Purple Heart Marine Corp Vet from 1993-2005 and I can tell you that you can't really claim such a statement. Sure its in good hopes but you haven't earned the ability to claim yourself a future MARINE. Its kinda insulting to those who try and fail.
So if you truly wanna become a Brother then id reconsider the wording.

As others have already stated, I believe we are already at this point in time of being a "Dystopian Society". Propaganda spreads throughout the years promoting different things, this year it's all about Nike. Next year it may be all about Adidas, one could only guess. These companies are constantly "brainwashing" people into buying their overpriced items because it's trendy and they know they want it; to look cool. I mean really? Nike socks are already $15 for one pair! Who in the right mind would spend that much for socks? You could easily go to Target and get 16 pairs of socks for $15, or even more. Due to this, it's real obvious we are under Corporation Control. Maybe Nike will control the world soon, that would be a sight. Big companies like this wash out all the other local companies who can't compete with those competitors such as Wal-Mart. Those local stores are the stores that help the economy in the area flourish and prosper. It could only get worse...
