Threads like this are pointless, you're focusing on subjective interpretation of objective fact. The right-wing media propagates the belief that Obama is a Muslim purely because in American society the terms "Muslim" and "Terrorist" are synonymous. Therefore, when stupid people think of Obama, they link him to fear (as he is "different") and terror.

Also, it is common for politicians of all positions in the hierarchical scale in the Western World to claim they are Christian, purely because they know the majority of citizens (and therefore potential voters) assign themselves on some level to Christianity. They do this to try and get more votes.

Welcome to the ugly world of politics. It's all lies and mind games, no matter how much you try to convince yourself that this is not the case. The ironic thing is that most of the real politics that is carried out in government is the immoral politics of making it LOOK like you are carrying out politics.

My personal view is that Obama doesn't assign himself to any religion. He is, in my opinion, either Atheist or Agnostic, because such a well educated and intelligent individual rarely puts all his faith in some celestial deity.

However, as I said at the beginning of this post, trying to decipher his true religious belief is a waste of time. It doesn't affect anything to do with the way he runs his country. Why not spend your time and effort focusing on his foreign or economic policies? They are way more important

Like 2 posts above me said, if he openly declared he was Muslim, then the majority of people would assume he is a terrorist because of the media. However, I am not saying he is a Muslim, im just stating why he wouldn't say it,

Anyone who believes Obama is a Muslim is severely mentally challenged in the head and is most likely a religious, conservative, intolerant, and/or a racist. He is a Christian and that being said being a Christian isn't that much better than being a Muslim.

Your main point was that because his name had "Hussain" in it, first off, Hussain is a derivative of the Arabic word Hussan which means good or handsome, secondly, Hussain is not a muslim name, its an Islamic name.

I think this is probably the case. There's no reason to believe the Obama isn't at least a cultural Christian. He uses all of the basic jargon and behaviors fitting such an individual, even what are called "high cost signals" (i.e. behaviors that cost a lot of time/energy to show people you belong to a particular group.)

Furthermore, there's no evidence to support him being Muslim. Practitioners of that religion, orthodox or not, have an extremely ritualized set of behaviors from prayer, to eating habits that are all very, very costly. Even if we didn't have a good idea of what he was like before he became President, afterwards we have an even better idea of what he's up to -- and he's never done anything that even elicits a momentary thought that he follows Islam.

I'm sure that the Christians who post here can quickly give us a run down of what evidence there is that he does belong to their religion.

No doubt the weight will tilt heavily towards Christian, if for no other reason than because of the religious majority in this country -- and the extreme privilege that come with that -- means that all politicians conform to it.
